Audi is preparing a redesigned Q5 crossover, and the redesign will include the SQ5 trim. New spy photos capture the sportiest example in testing for the first time, and the company can’t hide the true nature of the model’s performance.
Audi covers the revamped crossover in an all-over camouflage wrap. This hides the design details of the model, but no amount of camouflage could hide the four exhaust pipes that protrude from the rear. The crossover also appears to sport bigger brakes.
The new photos capture a glimpse of the SQ5’s interior, but Audi is smart to cover it up. The interior of the Q5 should resemble that of the new Audi A4, with a screen in front of the driver and another on the dashboard for the infotainment functions. Audi’s popular crossover is expected to arrive with all the latest technologies and features.
The SQ5 doesn’t look all that different from the previous prototypes we spotted. The new crossover is expected to arrive with a single-frame grille flanked by air curtains and narrower headlights. A wide lower bumper opening extends across the bottom of its face. The rear features standing taillight units.
Whichever powertrain Audi chooses to power the redesigned SQ5, the engine is expected to produce between 350 and 370 horsepower (260 and 275 kilowatts). It’s unclear whether Audi will keep a V6 under its hood or opt for a four-cylinder engine option. It’s possible Audi could pair the chosen powertrain with a mild-hybrid setup for more efficiency and power.
We don’t have specific details on the rest of the crossover’s powertrain lineup yet, but we expect Audi to offer a variety of gasoline and diesel engines, with electrification likely a key feature. The Q5 is expected to arrive in a plug-in hybrid configuration, and an all-electric Q5 E-Tron is also arriving.
Audi hasn’t announced when the new Q5 and hotter SQ5 might debut, but we don’t expect the sportier variant to hit the cover until around 2024. The regular Q5 and its variants are expected to debut and go on sale before the SQ5. The new Q5 is expected to hit dealerships for the 2024 model year.
